Ok here is one image that you never want to turn around and see your child doing...
Now to start with, just as a bit of a warning, you need to understand that my cat is quite the hunter. She loves to kill small animals and birds! Bless her heart, but it is super duper disgusting!
Well we found a dead robin in the backyard last night as we were cleaning our bbq, which I thought was the only dead animal we would find. I had just went into the garage to grab the cleaner, and came back into the yard. Josiah was happily watching me in the garage, and patting the dog. So I came out of garage and shut the door and walk towards the bbq on back porch, thinking Josiah was right behind me. He loves to follow me around, so I just assumed he was there. So after the short walk of maybe 20 feet, I hear Josiah doing a little sad whimper cry. I turn around and he has a dead rat in his left hand. AHHHHH, I scream, "deeeaaaad raaat!" I knock it from his hand and rush him off to the bathroom in the house, and shove his hands under warm water and start to scrub. My husband said he would take care of the animal. I must have washed his poor hands and arms at least 5 times, using a ton of soap! As I got him ready for bed, I still didn't feel like he was clean enough so I cleaned his whole body with a clean wash-cloth with soap. (it was 9:15, by this time, so too late for a bath)
Needless to say I was completely mortified that my sweet little boy could pick up a dead animal. But after thinking about it with a more clear head I realized that he understood that the animal was dead and was clearly upset that it was not moving like it should. I did a little yippee in my heart, for my son has learned some kind of empathy. Even through a completely disgusting situation, your children can learn life-long emotional lessons. Watch out for those little teaching moments with your children. They can be good... :-/ I think
